Rebates and Tax Credits

Most electric companies encourage their customers to improve energy-efficiency of their appliances, including HVAC equipment. And because heating and cooling are by far the most energy-consuming activities, tuning up your system or upgrading to a better system means big energy (and monetary) savings. Below are the two major rebate programs that may help you offset some of the costs of HVAC improvements. You may also qualify for the federal renewable energy tax credit.

BGE Smart Energy Savers Program

If you live in Maryland and are serviced by the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE), you may qualify for one of the rebates BGE offers as a part of their Smart Energy Savers Program. The program offers rebates on HVAC equipment, geothermal heat pumps and ductless systems. You can get somewhere between $200 and $1,800 back, depending on the type of HVAC improvements you make. Before you have any work done, make sure you hire a local Maryland HVAC contractor participating in the BGE program, such as A Quality. If the work is performed by a non-participating contractor, you won’t be eligible for the rebates.

FirstEnergy Corp. Energy Efficiency Program

FirstEnergy Corp. is an umbrella company for multiple electric companies in several states. In Pennsylvania, FirstEnergy Corp. controls Metropolitan Edison (Met-Ed), Pennsylvania Electric (Penelec), Pennsylvania Power (Penn Power) and West Penn Power. Depending on which of these electric companies you are using, you may qualify for rebates on such labor and equipment as:

  • Tune-up of your existing central air system, geothermal system or your heat pump.
  • Installation of a high-efficiency HVAC system.
  • Purchase of certain HVAC equipment, such as a mini-split heat pump.
  • Installation of an Energy Star® geothermal heat pump.

To qualify for these rebates, it’s important that the work is performed by a participating HVAC contractor such as A Quality HVAC.

Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit

You may be able to recoup up to 30% of your expenses if you have recently installed a geothermal heat pump. There is no cap on how much you can get back, as long as your residence and your equipment qualify for this credit. If you are planning on converting your home to geothermal heating and cooling, don’t wait too long. The credit is set to expire at the end of 2016.

If none of these companies is your electricity provider, visit the website of your provider and look for similar rebate programs. Also check for incentive programs implemented on the county level.

What Our Customers Are Saying

testimonial “The contractor was very helpful in explaining everything. They provided the best, most efficient setup out of all the proposals that I received. One example was putting the return duct work in the walls and several of them to provide better air circulation.”
